How each brand presents the choice
ij.start.canon
Canon leads with a recommended bundle and puts the individual components lower down the same page. The scanning utility is one of those separate components, so a quick install can leave it out without ever saying so.

HP has mostly collapsed the choice into a single app that carries the driver inside it. Simpler, but it means the app is not optional in the way people assume, and removing it takes printing with it.

Epson Printer Setup
Epson splits its tools further than anyone else. There is a basic scanning app and a detailed one, and they install separately. If the scan window looks stripped back compared to what a guide describes, you probably have the other one.

Brother Printer Setup
Brother is the most honest about it, offering the full package and a driver-only download side by side. That transparency is useful, though it does mean people choose driver-only without realising scanning is part of what they declined.

Already installed and scanning doesn't work?
You don't need to remove anything first. Run the full installer over the top of what's already there, and the missing pieces get added without disturbing the printer you've already set up.

What the driverless route is actually good for
It's tempting to skip installation entirely, and for a second computer in the house that's the right call. A laptop that prints a boarding pass twice a year does not need software from a printer manufacturer running on it permanently.

Treat it as a supplement rather than a replacement. One machine in the house gets the full package and handles scanning and maintenance. Everything else prints driverless and stays clean. That split gives you the useful half of both options and is how most households should be set up anyway.
