While swimming in the ethereal blue waters of Weekuri Lagoon and seeing the hamlet of Waikaroko, where the gray-haired chief welcomed us into his house and gave us coconuts to drink, I did not see a single other Westerner the whole time. The resort's spacious studios, suites, and villas have textured ceramics that play off the traditional roof forms of Sumatra, carved wood elements that hint to native ikat patterns, used books in English and French, and outdoor baths with soaking tubs. And there are many trips and adventures waiting to be had outside these confines.

As Eve put it, "French never replicate, it's not in phrazle the culture," and the hosts' top priorities are for visitors to enjoy themselves, make new connections, and get new insights. Despite the allure of the shell-strewn beach and the broad, bright sunsets, the establishment is not built to keep guests on the premises around the clock. Those who go to Sumba should take advantage of the opportunity to discover new places. To that aim, the Ivaras and their crew have devised a plethora of options for doing so, whether on a guided tour or independently, by vehicle, e-bike, or e-Mini Moke. Stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) and snorkelling spots are available, and there are good waves for surfing just outside the door or a short distance away.

Cap Karoso's design is not a faithful representation of Sumba; you won't find any ikat fabrics on the walls, and the only buildings with traditional thatched roofs are the six-room Malala Spa and the Technogym-equipped fitness centre. Commissioned via a Jakarta gallery, the original artwork has abstract visual allusions to the island. The Ivaras place a premium on exactness. The staff wears white tunic tops and deep blue, wide-legged trousers that are cinched at the waist with woven belts creating a look that is both casual and beautiful. Eve waited (relatively) patiently for the curved bamboo and cane furniture upholstered in gorgeous Pierre Frey fabrics for use as dining chairs, bar stools, couches, daybeds, and even custom high chairs.
