Rainbow flames float in the skies over West Virginia! This is a real image and it is not the result of Photoshop: nature can produce wonderful phenomena that go far beyond the human imagination. What we are seeing is a fire rainbow, an extremely rare phenomenon that occurs only in certain climatic conditions. In order for one of these rainbows to appear, three very specific conditions must be met: it must be a cold day, the Sun must be at a height greater than 58 degrees and under it there must be particular clouds, cirrus fibrates.

Inside them there are ice crystals that act as small prisms suspended in the air capable of refracting light. To observe a fire rainbow, however, the light must be refracted by all prisms in the same way. This only happens when all the crystals are aligned horizontally, which is extremely rare. Given all these conditions, the most likely places to witness the fire rainbow can be found. For example, it will be impossible to observe it in northern Europe, where the Sun hardly comes to be at a height greater than 58 degrees. Instead, it is more likely to observe it from the United States, where climatic conditions are more favorable to its formation. Credit: Christa Harbig
